Idaho Medicaid uses provider enrollment information, including National Provider Identifiers (NPIs), to identify providers and process claims. Providers must ensure their billing information matches their Idaho Medicaid enrollment records to help prevent claim rejections or processing delays.

Provider Identification and Billing Information

When submitting claims to Idaho Medicaid, verify that the provider information matches the information registered with Idaho Medicaid.

Review the following information for accuracy:

  • Billing Provider NPI: Use the NPI associated with the enrolled billing provider.
  • Taxonomy Code: Include the appropriate provider taxonomy code when required.
  • Provider Enrollment: Ensure the provider is enrolled with Idaho Medicaid and that the enrollment information is current.

Third-Party Liability (TPL) and Carrier Codes

Idaho Medicaid generally acts as the payer of last resort. When a patient has other health insurance coverage, that insurance must typically be billed before submitting the claim to Idaho Medicaid, subject to applicable exceptions.

Idaho Medicaid uses Third-Party Resource (TPR) Carrier Codes to identify insurance carriers associated with a patient's other coverage.

These codes help identify the appropriate insurance carrier when coordinating benefits between Medicaid and other payers.

Idaho Medicaid TPR Carrier Code List

Use the following document to locate carrier codes associated with third-party insurance coverage:

Document updated: July 10, 2026.

The document lists carrier codes alongside their corresponding insurance carrier names. Use it to identify the carrier code associated with the patient's other insurance when that information is required.

Note: TPR Carrier Codes are not the same as electronic payer IDs used to route claims through Claim.MD. Do not substitute a TPR Carrier Code for a payer ID or Submitter ID unless specifically instructed by the payer.

Understanding Idaho Medicaid Claim Rejections

If an Idaho Medicaid claim is rejected or denied due to provider identification or third-party insurance information, review the rejection message and verify the applicable billing details.

Common areas to review include:

  • Provider Information: Confirm the billing NPI and applicable taxonomy code match the provider's Idaho Medicaid enrollment.
  • Other Insurance Coverage: Verify whether the patient has additional insurance that must be billed before Medicaid.
  • Carrier Code: If a TPR Carrier Code is required, confirm the code matches the appropriate insurance carrier in the reference document.
  • Coordination of Benefits: Ensure the claim contains the required primary insurance payment or adjustment information when Medicaid is billed as the secondary payer.

Correct any inaccurate information and follow the applicable claim resubmission instructions.
